Evaluation

Film Opening Evaluation

For our AS Media Studies, we decided to choose the two minute film opening option. At first when we started planning our film, we originally wanted it to be about some children and a scary looking doll. However, after we started filming and within a week of trying to put it together, we realised it would not work as we are teenagers playing a child’s role. We then came up with a second idea – The idea of two teenage girls being followed back to their house and getting kidnapped – We used this idea as our film opening and found that it flowed a lot better than the other idea.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Our media product was intended to develop forms and conventions of real media products by taking into account all of the research we did on the suspense/horror genre and take into account all of the different aspects of how they make their film the best and what things we can be inspired by.
In one bit of research I did that was based on a horror and suspense movie, the song 'Santa Baby' is playing whilst slow and mysterious shots guide us around an underground car park, the fact that the filming is very mysterious instantly makes you realise that something bad is going to happen. Not only this, but the song they use is very happy and jolly and is the complete opposite to the expression the different shots are giving you, it makes the film opening seem twisted and abnormal. When we added our soundtrack, we did try and use part of a very happy and upbeat song called '5 years time' by Noah and the Whale at the beginning of our film opening, however, after adding this song to the beginning we found that it didn't fit as well as we would of hoped.

Another piece of research I did called was on a film called 'Choose (2011)' and was based on something very similar to our final film opening - The film opening portrays a typical teenage girl on the computer talking to her friends, at this point everything comes across as being completely normal. Our film opening links to this, this is because it starts with a girl at the park that is on her mobile talking to her other friend and they are planning on meeting each other but the other friend is running late, it only has the diegetic sound of birds in the background. In order to generate a message across and make it clear towards the audience, after seeing the girl sitting on the bench we then add a small snippet of a hooded person walking around a tree with a tense music sound– From this point on, it is then clear that their every move is being watched. Especially as we did not show the friend on the other end of the phone, the point where we see a hooded person walking towards the teenage girl sitting on the bench immediately makes the audience wonder if the hooded person really is her friend or if it is someone else. By adding this scene, it lets the audience know that this could be a sense of de ja vu. The film ‘Choose’ then introduces more characters and shows a boy lying on the bed, still
making the film show innocence as the boy is reading something but does not seem to have a of what is happening outside his room. The girl at the beginning of the film is then seen walking out of her bedroom towards the stairs with very little light; the shot makes her seem very small compared to the large hall landing. In our film, as the girls begin to get up from the park bench and start walking home, the shots we have then added make it clear that someone is watched them and something isn't quite right. The film I researched then moves onto the girl walking down a dark stairway, we continue to hear her voice on the phone whilst the shot moves to the outside of the house with the light switching on. We have included a similar shot to this in our movie - When the two girls enter the house, it then leads to the outside of the house with the light upstairs being switched on, this shots gives the impression that someone is watching them. At the end of the film opening called ‘Choose’, the girl then walks into the room of her family being tied up and a silhouette of the back of someone. In our film opening, we have taken the idea of the main characters finally finding the thing that is watching them and instead of one being captured; they both end up being tied up and put into the boot.
We also use certain aspects of a film we researched called ‘The Ring’, this film starts with two teenage girls watching the television and talking whilst playing practical jokes. Our film opening interprets this in our own way – At the beginning of our film opening, one girl plays a practical joke on the other and later on the girls are watching television in the dark making everything seem perfectly normal.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Our media product represents social groups such as teenagers as being particularly naive and almost oblivious to the world around them. The fact that there are two girls in the park and there are snippets of someone watching them and they don’t notice makes them seem like they don’t have a care in the world and that teenagers can be seen as being completely involved in themselves and their friends. At the beginning of our film opening, it shows the two teenage girls as having a very good sense of humour as it starts with a practical joke of trying to make the other girl jump and as being very chatty and friendly. At the end it shows just how devoted they are to each other and how much friendship really means as one girl puts her own life in danger in order to save the other. Not only this, but our media product represents gender very closely – The fact that the two teenage girls and the ones being kidnapped relates girls as being vulnerable. The person that plays the stalker in the film is in fact a male, this portrays males as playing the more violent role.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

I would hope that a media institution like ‘Hammer’ might distribute our media product, Hammer are a well known film company based in the UK and have created films such as the Woman in Black and Let me In. Both of these films are very mysterious and mainly in Woman in Black slowly introduces the audience into the scene. Although the media institution is well known, I would hope that our film opening would be just as good as their films and would succeed in sending shivers up the audiences arm.

Who would be the audience for your media product?

In our original film opening, we had our target audience mainly towards teenagers. However, when we first started filming and slowly had more ideas, we soon realised that having ourselves as teenagers in a film about children and a haunted doll would not of worked the way we wanted too and may not have come across very well towards out target audience – It was because of this, that we changed our original idea. We knew that one thing that us ourselves are scared about is being watched by a stranger and having someone in your
own personal space – therefore we knew that basing our film opening on this would help us achieve the suspense and interest of our target audience.

How did you attract/address your audience?

We tried to attract and address our audience from the very beginning – The fact that our film opening starts with an innocent girl sitting on the bench in the park on her phone, but then we see snippets of someone creeping towards her adds tension and immediately gets the audience hooked into the story line. Not only this, but that scene could be seen as de ja vu later on in the film as the same teenage girl sitting on the bench is later on looking in the fridge when someone jumps up on her and is kidnapped. We knew that the soundtrack is very important in creating the atmosphere and therefore, whenever a silhouette of the person ‘watching’ them would appear, we then adding a tension building tune – This not only adds to the atmosphere, but it addresses to the audience that something bad is to come.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Throughout making our film opening, we have definitely learnt a lot more about different technology than we did before. We have not only learnt how to film professionally, but how to cooperate and angle a lot of different shots through making our film opening. One important thing we learnt more about was the 180 degree rule, through making our film opening we didn’t realise that we broke this rule, but after re-filming we soon overcame this problem. We have learnt an exceptional amount about the software called 'iMovie' as none of us had ever used it before, in this we learnt:
• How to import movies and video clips from the SD card on the camera onto iMovie
• How to convert certain Youtube videos into an MP4
• How to detach audio from a movie clip
• How to mute clips
• How to add text, imovie sounds and different slide settings
• How to change the volume and reduce background noise
• How to split movie clips
When we first started creating our original film opening idea, we wanted to create our own twisted lullaby and we knew that if we tried to do this on garageband we could easily change and twist the lullaby in order to make it creepy and fit for our first film opening idea. A few things we learnt on garageband are the following:
• Changing the different instruments
• Saving new instruments

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt
in the progression from it to the full product?

In the preliminary task, no one in our group knew very much about filming and had never tried to create our own movie. Therefore, we learnt a lot of things from our preliminary task including using certain elements on the camera and everything involved in making a film to its full potential. Some of the things we learnt a lot about because of our preliminary task are the following:
• All of the planning involved
• How easily you can change your planning
• The quantity of shots that are needed and the amount they need to be re-taken
• The amount of editing and dedication
• The time it takes in order to put everything together
• The large quantity of time we spent out of school filming
• How important it is to make back ups
The preliminary task took a lot of hard work and dedication in order to get it to the vision we had inside our heads. From all the variety of ideas and changes made in the planning, we learn through our preliminary task that you can never really know how the film and shots you planned will turn out until you actually film it and put it together yourself. In our preliminary task, we left the soundtrack until last minute. However, one thing we realised with the preliminary task is how important the soundtrack is and how much of a difference it can make to your overall film. Secondly, in our preliminary task we took and retook far more shots than we actually needed. By taking more footage than we actually used, we realised how much having more footage is beneficial and is better than having less – Taking more footage means you can film a certain shot using different angles and when it comes to the editing stage, you can easily take and add in certain angled shots in order to see which ones fit better.

Media lesson - 26/03/2013

In todays revision day for media studies, we showed our teachers our nearly finished film opening product. We then decided on a few more things we could tweak, for example:
  1. Making the screaming louder when the girl is looking in the fridge
  2. Making the car slamming louder
  3. Adding some more music during the park scene
  4. Adding an extra shot to the beginning of the film opening in order to introduce the surroundings

Original film opening ideas:

Beginning of our film opening: Ideas

In this beginning of our film opening, we put all of our ideas we had from the storyboard together and through doing this we decided what things worked well and what things we needed to change. A few things we noticed in creating these were:
- The dialling on the mobile at the beginning was too quickly
- The conversation with both girls is un-needed, only one girl is needed in order to add suspense
- The girl scaring the other needs to be more suspense filled and a mysterious shot in order to make sure the audience do not know who is creeping up on the girl
- There needs to be more stalker shots at the beginning of the film
- The shot of the hand going down the tree needed to be taken out and replaced by another stalker shot
- Some of the shots are silent and therefore a soundtrack of some kind would build the tension
- The house sequence needs to be changed; a conversation is not needed
- Some of the shots need to be edited down and tweaked

Media lesson - 06/03/2013

After having the weekend to think over a new story plot, we then decided on a few ideas:
- Keeping the two girls in the park
- The girls could be sitting on a blanket
- Someone could be watching them
- They could still go back to their house and have a sleepover
After we discussed our new ideas with the teacher, we then decided on our idea of having two girls relaxing/meeting up in the park. The two girls then walk home and someone is watching them - perhaps they could be kidnapped?

Media lesson 1/03/2013

After running through our film opening so far, we discussed our ideas about the doll further with our teacher and decided that our film opening didn't quite match with the idea we had in our head. The fact that me and Amara were both playing teenage girls playing in the park with a doll didn't seem right as you would not see teenage girls playing in the park with a doll. After having this discussion with our teachers, we then decided that we needed to change our idea quickly and fast in order to come up with a sensible story plot and characters that we could both play.

Lullaby - First attempt at film opening

Lullaby -

First attempt

With this film opening, after putting everything together and seeing what we'd done so far we realised how much it didn't work. The fact that two teenagers are playing the role of what should be two children in the park with a doll does not quite make sense. We like some of the shots we've used and the storyline, however, this would have worked a lot better if we knew children that could play these roles instead of two teenagers. We also like the fact that the doll is being shown repetitively in order to give the audience the message that something isn't quite right.

Horror Film Ideas

Horror Film Ideas

All of these names are potential film names that link with our plan of our movie - A doll that is 'haunting' two girls, the fact that most of the titles have to do with sleeping and children is something that makes it all the more scary and frightening.

These horror film ideas are things we thought of from the very start - We thought about what made a scary movie: The soundtrack being spooky tension building, the mise en scene involving different aspects such as a haunted house or a graveyard, incorporating different types of camera shots and editing wise including both straight edits and white flashes.

This story plot was another storyboard of our film beginning, we tried to made it so that each

All of these ideas were a potential story planning of ideas we thought about - We decided to put them into a spider diagram in order to try and link all the different ideas together.

Blackwoods - Amara Bullen

Non-diagetic sound is used in the opening of the film. It’s an upbeat rock song which may be used to forebode what type of film it’s going to be.

The filming has been sped up throughout the opening of this film.

This clips starts with a fade in tilt shot upwards of the trees, making the viewer feel small. Also the camera spins whilst looking up which creates a sense of confusion and may make the viewer feel dizzy.

Fog is used as a part of the mise-en-scene which can add to the sense of location and whereabouts.

The shot changes by flickering like an old television or CCTV filming that’s faulty. Creating a sense that something might be wrong

This then carry’s on to a straight edit of a tilt shot down of a mountain.
This is quite contrasting as the mountains are peaceful places where as the music is heavy metal which disturbs and contrasts with one another. Also the flickering of the screens and sped up filming contrasts with it too.

The next shot flickers quickly to a long shot of someone walking down a hall way quickly, not showing his face. This may suggest that the person is up to no good.
The screen flicks off too quickly, not giving enough time for the viewer to take in exactly what the man looks like.

A straight edit is used to show another establishing shot of some more mountains which is panned across with the producers credits on it.

The screen jitters to a close up of the same man walking but not showing his face giving him a sense of mystery

The next shot used contains two clips at the same time, one in the background and one in the foreground slightly faded. The background clip is of mountains and the other clip is of a skull flickering. These two images contrast as the mountains show peace and nature where as a skull shows death. The skull adds to the mise-en-scene as it helps add to the effect of the genre of the film.

A shot of candles quickly flicks on and off the screen, creating a spooky affect

A sped up sun rise is shown, flicking closer and further away like a faulty camera.

The sun rise also contributes to a peaceful feeling and contrasts with the music being played.

This screen also has more production credits on it.

A dead fox is shown and the rotting process of it is sped up to gross the viewers out and make them worried as to what will happen in the film.

A straight edit is then used to show a snarling wolf, showing its teeth showing anger and aggression

Another straight edit is used which shows a cross with the name and date of ‘Willie Lahaye 1886’. The cross is representing that this person has died and is long gone. May make the viewers question how he died.

The film name ‘Backwoods’ straight edits in front of the cross

The next screen continues showing the ‘Backwood’ title, giving time for the viewers to read it. In the background behind the title shows a boy who looks like he could be from the country in a past time maybe. He seems to look scared by something and looks stereotypically uneducated.

The title still shows in the next screen which has a zooming in shot of an older man with long messy hair.

A bow and arrow is shown being pointed at something but you can’t see what it’s being pointed at or who’s shooting it.
The next couple of shots may seem random as there may be a link between them and the film or there may not be.

The next shot is of as dead deer so viewers could think that the bow and arrow has killed the deer

There is a clip of a hand and finger pointing over a map around a ‘Military Reservation’. Credits are shown on the page whilst the clip is being played and the same music is being played

This may suggest that the film has something to do with the military

A ‘No Trespassing’ sign is shown on the floor so it’s probably been ripped off the fence or ignored maybe suggesting that it’s going into the military reservation .

This screen also carry’s on showing more credits

Weapons are being fired in the next short clip suggesting death as this could kill a person or animal

Let Me In - Amara Bullen

Let Me In, directed by Matt Reeves, is about a bullied young boy that befriends a young female vampire who lives in secrecy with her guardian.

I chose this film because the soundtrack to the opening of this film drew me in and stood out as a good example of a horror movie. I thought that the sounds used were quite threatening and the shots used were interesting as they leave the viewer guessing and making up stories in their heads as to what's happening in the film.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yjL7VEFvOxM

While the producer credits are shown on the screen by fading in at the very beginning, an echoing choir is singing in one tone that gradually becomes clearer and louder. On top of this, a harp is very slowly playing in a minor tone making the atmosphere sad. The plucks of the harp strings echo so that they end up combining into the sound of the choir singing. The sound drifts off into a minor scale which makes the choir sound haunting almost as it comes across as harsh and drifting out of tone. The sounds put together enhance a scary surrounding making the viewer feel tense and adds to the scary affect making it seem like something is wrong but they don't know what yet so it keeps the viewers guessing the worst.

A black screen is shown and the choir becomes quieter and a fade in of each word of the title is shown in big, bold letters, written in red. The colour red is often referred to blood and death as it is written in front of a black screen. This may give the viewer an image that death may occur in the film. After the title has fully appeared, the choir fades out into nothing as well as the title which fades out into blackness once again.

A loud booming drum breaks the silence which repeats while a place and date appears on the screen (Los Alamos, New Mexico, March 1983) which can scare the viewer as this relates more to real life.

The sound of wind builds up before a picture is shown on the screen. The wind gets louder and a low brass instrument accompanies the drum, playing the same haunting note over and over.

A small, orange light is show in the middle of the screen is zoomed into it to see that it's an establishing shot of an ambulance and a few police cars going round a winding road surrounded by some trees. Sirens fade in and become louder as the camera nears closer to re-enforce the audience that they are police cars. This shot can make the viewer interested in what's happening but nervous at the same time as the sirens are on so something must have happened and they're surrounded by trees on a winding road so they could be far away from a safe place.

A factor of mise-en-scene is that this scene is filmed at night as its pitch black which can scare people as some people are afraid of the dark and most bad things happen at night. I can also be quite threatening as you can't see what’s lurking in the dark, if there is anything there or not.

A tracking shot of the police cars and an ambulance is shown from in the trees and the sound of the vehicles is emphasised to show that they are driving quickly, building suspense to show that they need to get to the destination quickly.

A shot shown from the inside the police car is of the front of the window showing that it's snowing heavily as the window-wipers are moving quickly.

A straight edit to a shot of the radio which has a radio transmission of a man asking for them to reply in code. The voice is stereotypically a man's voice as he must be a police man and this role is stereotypically carried out by a man as they are known to be the braver and stronger gender.

The next straight edit is blurry and isn't very clear as to what it's showing. It seems to show a trolley bed as the camera moves to show the bottom of the foot of a person that is laying down on the bed. The camera is quite shaky so suggest that it's shot inside of the ambulance. To add to the fact that they're moving quickly, creaking and shaking of the bed and things in the ambulance are cluttering noisily.

Scissors are shown cutting the material, supposedly belonging to the person's on the bed showing that he must be injured, leaving the viewers with no idea of what's going on making them wonder how they got there? Who he/ she is with? What's wrong with them? etc.

The hand of the person reaches up and grabs one of the uniformed men who tries to stop him/her. The uniformed man is stereotypically male as it seems they're dealing with something major and women aren't seen to be able to handle too much pressure and blood.

Another straight edit changes to show the radio again and the voice replying, inside the ambulance describes the 'male' that is injured in the ambulance. This is typical for the person lying on the bed to be a male as they tend to get up to no good and misbehave more than women.

Different shots are shown to be helping the man on the bed  but faces haven't been shown yet so this also adds to the curiosity of the viewers as it leaves things unknown.

Sounds of the patient being sick and making strange noises may freak the viewers out, still not fully understanding what's happening. The report on the radio said that he had swallowed acid so this could link in which can gross the viewers out and feel his pain almost.

All the while, the brass instrument and drum had been playing quietly in the background, unnoticeably yet still haunting like.

All sounds come to a sharp, high pitched sound and all is quiet. A straight edit is shown of the back of a man in what looks like a hospital.
